��I�m pretty disappointed after
placing third in the morning preliminaries,�� said
McCormick. ��I had a great first dive in the final but made
a big mistake on the second and that threw me out of
contention.”
China was 1-2 with Li Junbai
first at 534.55, Li Teng second at 510.45 and Oleksandr
Gorshkov of the Ukraine third at 452.25.
McCormick followed up his platform event with strong
performances in the Boys B 1 metre and 3 metre events
finishing 10th and 8th respectively. McCormick
also paired up with Maxim Bouchard of Montreal in the Boys A
& B 3 metre Synchro event where they placed 7th.
Miszkiel, competing at his
first World Juniors, was happy to make the final in the Boys
B platform event and was very satisfied with a 12th place
finish.

The turning
point for McCormick was nailing his opening dive in the
final, an inward three and half for 9.0�s and 9.5�s from the
judges. �That dive had been given me a lot of trouble,� said
McCormick. �It was just a great way to start the
competition.�.
McCormick’s win not only
earned him a spot in the record books, but also a place on
the Canadian Team heading to the World Junior Diving
Championships in Malaysia in August where he will compete in
the Boys B (14-15) 1 metre, 3 metre and platform events.
Also earning a spot on the
World Junior Team was Shane Miszkiel who claimed the silver
medal in the Boys B Platform event Friday, but had to wait
until Sunday to find out if he made the team for sure.
“It was a long weekend of
waiting for Shane, but in the end his performance on
platform earned him a place on the team,” said Boardworks
coach Tommy McLeod. “I’m really proud of the way he
put it all together at this meet.”
The World Junior Diving
Championships takes place in Kuala Lumpur August 23 – 27.

Courtney Hattie Wins
Double Gold at Jr. Nationals
Boardworks newest rising star,
10 year old Courtney Hattie, announced her arrival on the
national scene with
gold medal performances in two of her events this past
weekend at the Canadian Junior Nationals in Edmonton.
Hattie, a first time competitor at the
national level won the Girls D (11 & under) platform and the
Girls D 3 metre events. Hattie was also named Best
Overall Group D Female of the meet.
It was a very close
competition, but Courtney’s consistency and hard work
leading up to the event really paid off for her”, said
Boardworks coach Lisa Boog.
Also delivering personal best
performances during the competition was first time national
competitor Julia Milden (Girls 11 & under), finishing 10th & 12th in the Girls D 1m and
platform respectively, Eric
Neil, who claimed two top 12 finishes in Group C Boys
(12-13) events and Megan Lilburn with a 9th place finish in
the Girls Group C (12-13) 1 metre event.

Boardworks Divers Vie for Junior World
Championship Team Berths
Senior national team
member Riley McCormick of Victoria is among the favourites
competing in the 2006 Speedo Junior National Diving
Championships, taking place July 13-16 at the Kinsmen Sports
Centre in Edmonton.
Divers from ages 9 to 18 will be battling for national
titles and divers aged 14-18 will be competing for 12
available spots on the national team that will represent
Canada at the 2006 FINA World Junior Diving Championships
scheduled for August 23-27 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
McCormick, who missed the 2005 Junior Nationals
Championships because of a schedule conflict with the World
Championships in Montreal, is a 13 time junior national
champion and favourite in the Boys B events. He will
face tough competition from Kevin Leong of Edmonton and
Maxim Morneau-Ricard of Quebec City.
Eighteen Boardworks divers will be making the trip to
Edmonton this year including 2005 Junior National team
members Molly Schupbach, Patrick Heaney, Rachel Kemp and
Shane Miszkiel.

In the Men’s platform event
Gorup-Paul won the gold medal with 1,240.10 points with
Kevin Geyson of Winnipeg was second at 1,139.85 and Sehn
third at 1,128.60.
��It�s a big load off my shoulders to get on World Cup
team,�� said Gorup-Paul. ��I didn�t do anything fancy and
except for one dive in the final everything was very strong.
But I certainly hope to increase the difficulty of my list
for the World Cup.��
Sehn�s victory in the 10-metre synchro event with Gorup-Paul
was also his second gold of the competition. He won the one-metre
on Friday.
��Wegadesk and I only got together in March so we�re still
fine tuning,�� said Sehn. ��But we have the tools to be a
strong synchro team. We�re a good match and we have similar
strengths. It�s a pretty exciting moment for me personally
to know I�m going to the World Cup.��
The World Cup is the 3rd most
important competition behind the Olympics and World
Championships. In addition to Gorup-Paul and Sehn the
Canadian team is Emilie Heymans, Montreal ( 10-metre, three-metre
and three-metre synchro), Marie-Eve Marleau, Montreal
(10-metre), Blythe Hartley of Calgary (three-metre, three-metre
synchro), Filion and Benfeito, Montreal (10-metre synchro),
Arturo Miranda, Montreal (three-metre), Julio Abate,
Montreal (three-metre).

Divers Aim for World Cup Team Berths
Five Boardworks divers are in
contention for World Cup team berths at the Summer National
Championships in Winnipeg this weekend. Rachel Kemp, Martha Dale, Riley McCormick, Wegadesk
Group-Paul and Eric Sehn all have a good chance of capturing
one of 8 – 12 spots on the team heading to Changshu, China
in July.
Kemp, 14, who became the youngest national medallist in
Canadian diving when she won a silver medal in the Women’s
Platform event at the 2006 Winter Nationals, hopes to repeat
that performance to earn a berth on the team.
Gorup-Paul, McCormick and
Sehn look to qualify in the Men’s Platform event where Sehn
and Gorup-Paul won silver and bronze at the Winter
Nationals. McCormick, who is coming off several
illnesses and injuries is also a contender having finished
7th in his Fina Grand Prix debut in Russia in March.

Boardworks Wins Vaanta Cup
Boardworks took
Europe by storm last weekend winning 20 medals at the
2006 Vaanta Cup in Finland. Lead by Shane Miszkiel who
won 4 gold medals, each of the seven divers who attended
them meet came home with a medal.
Boardworks faced tough
competition from divers from Finland, Russia, Sweden,
Norway and the Netherlands but was strong enough to win
the Top Team award and Shane Miszkiel and Molly
Schupbach won the Best Boy and Best Girl awards.

Gold for Blythe Hartley
MELBOURNE- Blythe Hartley of Victoria�s Boardworks Diving
Club earned the gold medal on women�s three-metre Saturday
for her second win in diving competition this week at the
Commonwealth Games.
Hartley led
for four of the five rounds in the Women�s 3 metre final and
totalled 690.05 points. Chantelle Newbery of Australia was
second at 681.30 and her compatriot Kathryn Blackshaw was
third at 629.00.
��I�m very
excited about the three-metre title, it was a lot of work
today,�� said Hartley, also the one-metre winner on Friday.
��It was much more challenging than yesterday and I�m happy
with my performance. I didn�t start off very well but I was
very pleased with the last three dives. I didn�t feel that
great and I was concerned whether I�d have enough endurance
to make it through the day.��
The
Canadian divers concluded another outstanding international
performance with nine medals (five gold, one silver and
three bronze). Australia also won five gold and 15 medals
overall in diving.
Blythe
Hartley Wins Commonwealth Gold
World
champion Blythe Hartley of Boardworks won the Women’s 1
metre title at the Commonwealth Games. Hartley showed
why she is the world champ collecting 644.95 points for her
fourth career Games medal. Sharleen Stratton of Australia
was second at 596.45 and her compatriot Kathryn Blackshaw
third at 544.40.
��I�m very pleased, it was very consistent,�� said
Hartley, 23, a runner-up in the event at the 1998 and
2002 Games. ��I used the same list as at worlds and I
received the same kind of scores on each dive. I had a
few competitions heading in here (on the NCAA circuit)
so it wasn�t the ideal situation arriving late but I
tried not to focus on that. I�m pretty excited to be
here with my team-mates and the Commonwealth Games are
always a great experience.��
13-year-old Boardworks diver Rachel Kemp was 10th.Kemp
was pleased with her showing. She was also sixth on
10-metre earlier this week.
��The one-metre is not my best event,�� she said.
��And it�s a quite a jump from the junior to the
senior level in this event. My prelims were pretty
good but I�m so happy with how I did in the finals.
I managed to stay relaxed and confident. I
absolutely loved my experience at these Games. ��
In men�s 10-metre synchro, Matthew Helm and Robert
Newbery of Australia won the gold medal with 440.58
points while Wegadesk Gorup-Paul and 14-year-old
Riley McCormick of Victoria were fourth at 396.18.
��Our individual dives were very good but we need to
work on our synchronization,�� said McCormick, who
was 11th with his partner in the same event at the
world championships last year. ��What stood out for
us is that we didn�t miss anything.��
Excitement for Canada’s Youngest Diver
March 15, 2006 – Canada�s youngest athlete at the
Commonwealth Games in Melbourne � 13-year-old diver, Rachel
Kemp � is a former gymnast, who took up diving just over
four years ago.
Kemp
burst onto the senior diving scene with a silver medal
performance at Canada�s winter national championships and
Commonwealth Games trials in Winnipeg.
She became the youngest female senior national medallist in
Canadian diving history with her second place finish in the
women’s 10 metre platform event.
�This is way beyond my expectations,�� the grade seven
student at the Royal Oak Middle School in Victoria said at
the time.
�There were some dives that
went better than I would have ever hoped.
�But I had some excellent
training leading up so I knew if I could put it all together
there was always a chance. The key was listening to my
coach,� she said.
Kemp, who is a three-time
junior national champion, said she was amazed when she made
it into Canada’s diving team – Australia’s biggest rival in
the sport.
“I’m excited,” she said after
arriving in Melbourne today. “I’m also kind of nervous, just
because there are so many people. It’s such a big meet and I
want to do well.”
The tiny diver will come up
against intense competition in the platform event,
particularly from Olympic gold and bronze medallists,
Chantelle Newbery and Loudy Tourky, from Australia and
Canadian team mate and world champion, Emilie Heymans.
Kemp said her school friends
were thrilled for her when she was selected to represent her
country at the Melbourne Games.
“They think it’s kind of
crazy,” she said.
The Games Diving competition begins on 22 March and
continues through to 25 March at the Melbourne Exhibition
Centre.

Boardworks Teenagers 7th &
8th in Grand Prix Debut
ELECTROSTAL, Russia- Fourteen-year-old Riley McCormick of
Victoria posted a personal best score Friday to place an
impressive seventh on men�s 10-metre tower in his Grand Prix
diving debut while 13 year old Rachel Kemp, also competing
in her first Grand Prix event, was eighth on women�s tower.
On men�s tower, McCormick totalled 410 points in the
semifinal and missed a berth in Saturday�s final by only one
spot. Wegadesk Gorup-Paul of
was 13th in the preliminaries missing a berth in
the semis by one position.
��To have a personal best score in the biggest event I�ve
ever competed in is really satisfying,�� said McCormick, a
12-time national junior champion. ��I was most pleased with
my back armstand triple which I had completely missed in the
prelims. To comeback and nail it was the best for me
because I hit it so well. The judging here is really tough
and I was so proud to see some 8.5�s go up for that dive at
a meet like this.��
McCormick�s coach Trevor Palmatier was confident his pupil
could deliver such a strong performance in competition.
��He was phenomenal,�� said Palmatier. ��It was quite an
accomplishment. He has a very hard list and he hit five of
six dives in the semi and he was on par with the very best
divers in the world. He was the youngest kid in the event
and to do so well really augurs well for the future.��
McCormick has battled injuries and illness this season as
well. He had mononucleosis at the start of the year and is
battling a painful thumb injury which continues to bother
him in competition.
More Canadian youngsters showed outstanding skills on
women�s 10-metre tower. 13-year-old Rachel Kemp of
Victoria
was third after the preliminaries behind two Chinese divers,
qualifying for the
semi-finals before being eliminated. Kemp, also in her
Grand Prix debut, finish in eighth place overall.
McCormick,
Kemp, Gorup-Paul and Palmatier now all head to Melbourne for
the Commonwealth Games.
2006 Canada Cup Comes To
Victoria
The
world’s best divers will be in Victoria May 5 – 7 for the 2006
Canada Cup Fina Diving Grand Prix. Victoria’s
Boardworks Diving Club will play host to Olympic, World and
Commonwealth Games champions from Canada, China, Russia, Italy,
the United States, Great Britain and Cuba.
World
champions and Olympic medallists Blythe Hartley from Victoria and
Alexandre Despatie from Montreal will be in Victoria to compete as
well as Boardworks divers Rachel Kemp, Wegadesk Gorup-Paul, Eric
Sehn and
Martha Dale.
Canada Cup
is the 6th of 9 stops on the 2006 Fina Grand Prix circuit.
Grand Prix events are also held in Sydney, Australia, Rostock,
Germany, Electrosal, Russia, Madrid, Spain, Zhuhai, China, Fort
Lauderdale, Florida and Rome, Italy.
Four Boardworks Divers Named To
Commonwealth Games Team
Boardworks wrapped up a
successful weekend at the Winter Senior National Championships by
having four divers named to the 2006 Commonwealth Games Team.
World Champion Blythe Hartley and World Championship finallists
Wegadesk Gorup-Paul and Riley McCormick will be joined by 12-year
old Rachel Kemp, who surprised many at her first senior national
competition with a silver medal in the Women’s 10 metre Platform
event.
Gorup-Paul and McCormick will team up
again in the Men’s Synchro 10-metre event, while Gorup-Paul will
also compete in the Men’s 10-metre Platform individual event.
Hartley, a 2002 Commonwealth Games
double medallist, will compete in the Women’s 3 metre event as well
as the Women’s 3 metre synchro event with her 2004 Olympic bronze
medal-winning partner Emilie Heymans of Montreal.
Kemp, who is 12-years old and a
three-time junior national champion, was also awarded the Beverley
Boys Award for top overall female performance at the championships.
The Commonwealth Games will take place
in Melbourne, Australia, March 15 – 21.

12- Year Old Rachel Kemp Youngest Medallist at
National Champs
Boardworks diver
Rachel Kemp burst onto the senior diving scene Saturday with a
silver medal performance at the Winter National Championships and
Commonwealth Games Trials in Winnipeg. Kemp, who is only 12
years old, became the youngest female senior national medallist in
Canadian diving history with her second place finish in the Women’s
10 metre Platform event.
Kemp, who splits her
training between Head Coach Trevor Palmatier and Assistant Coach
Tommy McLeod, just learned her dives on 10-metre this past fall.
“This is way beyond my
expectations,�� said the grade seven student. ��There were some
dives that went better than I would have ever hoped. But I had some
excellent training leading up so I knew if I could put it all
together there was always a chance. The key was listening to my
coach.��
Kemp, a former gymnast who took up diving just over 4 years ago, is vying for a place
on the Canadian team which will compete at the 2006 Commonwealth
Games in Melbourne, Australia this March. The team will be
named Sunday upon the completion of the competition.
Double Gold for Blythe Hartley at Nationals
Championships
Boardworks diver and World champion Blythe Hartley won two gold
medals on Friday at the Winter Nationals and Commonwealth Games team
trials diving competition.
On women�s one-metre springboard, Hartley was the victor with 305.80
points followed by Kelly MacDonald of Edmonton in second in 259.85
and V�ronique Lemieux of Montreal third in 242.65. Hartley, 23, won
gold in the event at the world aquatic championships in Montreal.
�I was quite pleased overall although I could have been sharper on
some dives,�� said Hartley, who�ll graduate this spring with a
communications major form the University of Southern California. Her
best dives on the day were her reverse and inward dives on which she
received some 9.0�s from the judges.
On women�s synchronized three-metre, Hartley and Emilie Heymans of
Pointe-Claire, Que., renewed their partnership for the first time
since their bronze medal performance at the 2004 Athens Olympics and
won the gold with 282.42 points. Martha Dale of Victoria and Mandy
Moran of Calgary were second at 275.76 and Meaghan Benfeito and
Jennifer Abel, both of Montreal, third at 268.50.
It was also Heymans� first major competition on springboard since
the Athens Games as she focused solely on 10-metre platform last
year. Both divers have 22 national titles apiece.
��We didn�t have much time to prepare so overall it actually went
better than we thought,�� said Heymans. ��Our preliminaries were
very strong but I think we were a bit tired in the final and both
missed a dive. But we did train together for over a year in
preparation for the Olympics and it showed tonight that we know how
each other works.��
Boardworks Among Sport BC Award Nominees
Boardworks divers Riley McCormick and
Blythe Hartley, as well as Head Coach Trevor Palmatier, were
among the finalist for the annual Sport BC Athlete of the
Year Awards.
This year�s event will mark the
fortieth year for the Athlete of the Year Awards, the
longest-running sport recognition event in the country.
Awards in sixteen different categories are given for
performances during the past year. Finalists are chosen
through a confidential voting process by a select committee
of media and sport representatives from around the province.
McCormick, 14, who was nominated
in the Junior Male Athlete of the Year category,
burst on to the Senior diving circuit this season with a
bronze medal at the Summer Senior National Championships.
He followed that up with a top 12 finish at the World
Championships in Montreal in the Men’s Synchro 10-metre
event with partner Wegadesk Gorup-Paul where they finished a
respectable 11th.
Olympic medallist Blythe
Hartley was nominated in the Senior Female Athlete of the
Year category after becoming World Champion in the
Women’s 1-metre event in Montreal in July. Hartley
also won the National 3-metre title in June.
Boardworks Head Coach Trevor
Palmatier, who was named Senior Coach of the Year by Diving
Plongeon Canada in November, was nominated in the Coach
of the Year category. Palmatier, who coaches
McCormick, Hartley, Gorup-Paul and national team member
Martha Dale, had an outstanding year including one world
championship title, 4 world championship finalists and 4
national titles.
Winners will be announced at
the annual Athlete of the Year Awards banquet on
Wednesday, March 8 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver.
Tori Kennedy Wins Marc LePoole
Award
Boardworks
diver Tori Kennedy was the recipient of the 2005 Marc
LePoole Award which was presented in Victoria on December
17. This annual award is presented to an individual for
their inspirational contribution to diving. It is meant as
an honor consistent with the outstanding contributions of
Marc LePoole to our diving community. Marc LePoole was the
first President of Boardworks Diving (then known as Pacific
Coast Diving) and served in that capacity for the past 12
years since helping to found the club in 1993. Marc also
sat as the President of BC Diving for the past 3 years, and
prior to his involvement in Victoria, was the President of
Dive Calgary, where his son (Chris LePoole) and daughter
(Lisa LePoole) trained as divers. Chris was a long-time
member of our Sr. National Team, finishing 8th on 3m at the
World Cup in 1991 and was a member of the Pan-American Games
and World Championships teams in the late 1990’s. Marc
worked extremely hard behind the scenes to ensure that
Boardworks would become a successful club with tremendous
opportunities for our divers. Marc lost a long battle with
kidney disease in March of 2005, leaving an incredible
legacy for the diving community and unforgettable memories
of this amazing man. The Marc LePoole Award honors these
memories.
At the Jr. World Championships in Brasil, October of 2004,
Boardworks diver Tori Kennedy was diagnosed with an
extremely rare blood disease, “aplastic anemia,” which only
inflicts 2 people in a million. Tori had dived in Calgary
for most of her career, moving to Victoria to train with
Head Coach Trevor Palmatier in the fall of 2002. Her
condition was considered life-threatening at the time of
diagnosis, and she required an immediate blood transfusion
to even fly home to Calgary safely. Since then she has
battled this disease with courage and strength far beyond
her years and with the tremendous support of her parents Pat
& Laurie and her brother Tristan. She has endured two
failed attempts at drug therapy and finally opted for a bone
marrow transplant that has successfully cured her of the
anemia! Never a complainer, Tori faced this struggle with a
dignity and bravery that matched Marc’s own character and I
know first hand that he was very proud of her outlook.
Tori recently visited us again in Victoria and came to see
all her teammates – even lending a hand on the judging panel
at the recent BC Provincial Championships. She is now back
in Calgary where she is still in recovery and will soon
begin weaning off her medications and start physical
therapy. She hopes to be back on the diving board next year
at this time. Remarkably, the University of Arkansas is
holding her diving scholarship for her and will honor it
whether she gets back to diving or not. What an incredible
and terrific offer from U of A!
Congratulations Tori Kennedy on this great honor. And
continued improvement in your recovery. We have all been
touched and inspired by your tenacity and courage – you must
have recognized that from all the tears and your standing
ovation. Next time you come visit though, you’ll need to
bring your bathing suit!
�I�m a bit surprised, but
definitely thrilled to have my hard work recognized,� said
Palmatier Sunday. �It�s an honour for myself, my divers and
for our diving club.�
Palmatier,
who has been with Boardworks since 1996, had a career best
season this year qualifying four divers for the World
Aquatic Championships this past July in Montreal, including
2005 World one-metre Champion Blythe Hartley.
Hartley, who won the Women�s 1 metre World title with a
world record score, was also named Athlete of the Year at
the Diving Plongeon Canada AGM.
Victoria’s
Wegadesk Gorup-Paul, 17, was a World Championship semi-finalist
in the Men’s 10 metre in Montreal and he teamed up with 14-year old
Riley McCormick in the Men’s 10 metre Synchro where
they placed a respectable 11th. Senior National team member
Martha Dale rounded out the Boardworks contingent placing 7th in the Women’s 3 metre Synchro
and 10th in the Women’s 1 metre.
Additional
highlights this season for Palmatier included four national
championship titles; one by Dale at the Winter Nationals and two won by Hartley
and one by Gorup-Paul at the Summer Nationals. Riley McCormick won a bronze medal at the same
competition while Martha Dale won silver in the Women�s
1-metre event.
The 2005
Canada Games in Regina in August capped off the season with
Gorup-Paul and McCormick finishing 1-2 in the Men’s 10 metre
event, both posting Canada Games record breaking
performances.

Win Medals at Junior Pan Am Championships
Four young Boardworks divers braved the winds and rain from
Hurricane Katrina to each win a medal at the Pan Am
Junior Diving
Championships in Fort Lauderdale last month. Boardworks
divers made up 1/6th of the 24
person team, but won 1/3 of the medals won by Canada.
Twelve year-old Rachel Kemp lead the team with 2 gold and one silver medal
in the Girls Group C events.
Eleven year old Patrick Heaney brought
home two silver medals which he won in the Boys D 1
metre and Boys D Platform.
Shane Miszkiel,
13, won a bronze medal in the Boys C 1 metre event and
just missed another medal in the Boys C 3 metre, where he
placed 4th.
Rounding out the
medals was 11-year old Molly Schupbach who finished 2nd in a
very close Girls D Platform event after finishing 4th, .15
point out of the medals, in the Girls D 3 metre event.

Gorup-Paul Named Flag Bearer for Team BC
Wegadesk Gorup-Paul
(Victoria) was named Closing Ceremony Flag Bearer in front
of over 200 athletes, coaches and mission staff just before
boarding buses to the Ceremony.
Gorup-Paul won the Gold medal in men’s 10m platform diving
and set a new Canada Games Record in the process. Though
keeping it to himself and his coach, Gorup-Paul competed
through a torn abdominal muscle to defeat his friend and
teammate Riley McCormick (Victoria) who also surpassed the
Games record.
“I’m certainly
honoured because our team has done so well at these Games,”
said Gorup-Paul. “There are so many amazing athletes to
choose from. I’m sure it wasn’t an easy pick.”
Boardworks Medal Haul for Team BC at 2005 Canada Games
Boardworks divers Jason
Earthy, Rachel Kemp, Riley McCormick and Wegadesk Gorup-Paul
each brought home medals for Team BC from the 2006 Canada
Summer Games which took place August 16 – 19 in
Regina.
Jason Earthy was
the first Boardworks diver to claim a medal when he placed
second in the Men’s 1- metre event, scoring 313.65 points
Twelve year old
Rachel Kemp became the youngest medallist in Canada Games
history with her silver medal performance in the Women’s
Platform event, scoring 444.15 . Kemp, a former gymnast has only been
diving for 3 years but is proving to be one of Canadian
diving’s rising stars.
Seventeen year
old Wegadesk Gorup-Paul, the current Canadian Men’s 10 metre
national champion, smashed the Canada Games record in the
Men’s 10 metre event scoring 620.91. Riley McCormick,
who also surpassed the previous Canada Games record, claimed
the silver medal scoring 589.11.

Blythe
Hartley Wins World Championship Gold
Blythe Hartley reclaimed her world Championship title as well as
setting a new world
record at the 2005 World Championships in Montreal last
month. Hartley, who joined the Boardworks team last
September, won the Women’s one metre title breaking her own
world record set in Fukuoka, Japan in 2001.
