Divers Coming to Victoria
(March 20, 2006,
Ottawa) Over 100 of the worlds best divers are coming to Victoria to
take part in the Canada Cup, being held at Saanich Commonwealth Place, May
5-7. The event is one of eight stops on the prestigious FINA Diving Grand
Prix circuit which sees the worlds top divers accumulating points towards
their overall world ranking and earning prize money.
World and
Olympic champions from 16 countries will be in attendance including Canadas
very best divers and three-time world champion and Olympic medalist
Alexandre Despatie. The Canadian team will face tough competition from
several countries including the diving powerhouse of China, which will be
sending its A team led by Guo Jingjing, defending world champion in 3M and
3M synchro and double gold medalist at the 2004 Olympics. Other countries
who have confirmed participation include Brazil, Cuba, Germany, Great
Britain, Hungary, Russia, Sweden, USA and Venezuela.
We are now
building towards the next Olympics and Canada is looking to reconfirm itself
as a legitimate medal contender for Beijing, says DPC chief technical
officer, Mitch Geller. The Canada Cup is part of this process in that we
go head-to-head with the top Chinese team on our home turf; then, in July,
we turn around and compete against them at the major international meet of
the summer in their backyard at the World Cup in Changshu.
The Canada Cup
is also an opportunity for our up-and-coming divers to establish themselves
as a force on the international scene, adds Geller.
